The Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, yesterday destroyed fake
and substandard products valued at about N8.5 million in Ekiti State.
The Head of SON in the state, Rilwan Fashina, said the items were
seized in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, with the help of local residents
who volunteered information.
The products destroyed included fake electric cables, vehicle tyres,
expired consumables, detergents, cereals, snacks, vegetable oil and
margarine.
Fashina, who supervised the destruction, said SON operatives in the
state also confiscated a number of fake gas cylinders from the market.
According to him, the fake gas cylinders which he described as “life
danger products” had been taken to SON Lagos Office which has the
equipment to destroy such items.
The SON boss said that the organisation was committed to the Federal
Government’s transformation agenda, using the instrument of
standardisation as yardsticks.
He urged Nigerians – traders and consumers alike – to steer clear of
activities capable of putting lives of their families in danger by
avoiding products that are too cheap in the open market.
He said that SON characteristically handed over culprits apprehended
with adulterated and substandard products to the police for prosecution
in addition to destruction of such products.
