About N360 million is being spent by the Federal Government for the
beneficiaries of Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P)
in Ekiti State.
The chairman of SURE-P in Ekiti and former Speaker in the old Ondo
State, Chief Femi Akinyemi,
described the scheme as a huge success and
one of the best poverty alleviation strategies.
Speaking after being conferred with Award of Merit at the 2014 Usi
Day Celebration on Saturday, Akinyemi condemned the states and local
governments for not showing enough transparency in the disbursements of
the funds to beneficiaries like the Federal Government.
He said: “The subsidy funds are being shared among the Federal,
State and Local Governments. The Federal Government under President
Jonathan has been using the money to empower our youths and women groups
in all the communities in the 36 states and in Abuja.
“But if the APC is saying that President Jonathan has not spent the
money judiciously, then the APC must explain how it has implemented its
own in all their states and local governments.
“No state or local council has shown any commitment the way President Jonathan has done.
“In Ekiti alone, we have 3,000 beneficiaries who are being engaged
in community services. So, indirectly, the President is improving and
adding values to our local economy with the stipends being given to
beneficiaries.
“And by the time they are exited after a year, they will not just be
allowed to go; we used to empower them to be able to stand on their
own. So, whichever way you look at it, SURE-P has been a huge success in
Nigeria,” he stated.
The ex-chairman, Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission
under Segun Oni’s Government, pointed out that Fayemi failed woefully in
the election because he did not put reliable structures in all the
councils to reach out to the people.
“I just consider it laughable when these APC people were talking
about photo or thermo chromic rigging in an election that was
transparent.
Governor Fayemi lost to inexperience and incompetence. He has no
viable structures in all the councils. He did not conduct local
government election where people can go to seek help,” he stated.
