… It is a lie, says govt
Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Governor
Kayode Fayemi administration of using the creation of 19 new local
council development areas, LCDAs, as a cover to siphon N10 billion from
the state treasury.
The state’s PDP Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, alleged
that the amount, which was part of accumulation of deductions from
allocations to the 16 local government areas, was billed to be taken out
of the state before the expiration of Fayemi’s tenure on October 16.
Oluwawole also alleged that federal allocations to the 16
constitutionally recognised councils for August, September and October,
this year, had also been earmarked for sharing, with the council
caretaker chairmen billed to be coerced into the arrangements for
cover-up.
He appealed to all wellmeaning Ekiti people to “as a matter of
urgency, caution the outgoing government to desist from financial
recklessness and leave Ekiti treasury in good state for the sake of
posterity.”
But the Commissioner for Information, Mr Tayo Ekundayo, said there
was no iota of truth in the claim that the government intended to siphon
money.
Ekundayo said: “Such money is not available in the first place. If
what they are saying is true which I know is not true, they should wait
till October 16 when this government will leave and have access to the
financial records of the state.
“I am not aware of any N10 billion the new local governments will
have access to; these people are stark illiterates who don’t know the
financial records of the state and know nothing about governance. It is a
total lie and it is meant to cause confusion in the polity,” the
commissioner said.
Meanwhile, the Ikole community in Ekiti State has rejected the name
given to one of the new LCDAs created out of Ikole council area.
The rejection came less than 24 hours after Governor Kayode Fayemi
signed the law creating the 19 new LCDAs following passage by the state
House of Assembly.
The Elekole of Ikole- Ekiti, Oba Oba Ajibade Fasiku, said that since
majority of the towns and villages making up the new Kajola-Oreniwa
LCDA fell within Ikole metropolis, its name should reflect that of the
parent body.
The community said it would frustrate the new council if its name was not changed to Ikole West LCDA.
Oba Fasiku, in a telephone conversation with journalists yesterday,
regretted that he and his people were not consulted or taken along when
the idea of the council was mooted.
