EKITI PEOPLE IN KWARA DEMAND MERGER WITH EKITI STATE

Ekiti people who occupied two local government areas in Kwara State have demanded reunion with their kiths and kin in Ekiti State in the South-West zone of the country.

The people, under the banner of Kwara Ekiti Indigenes, a socio-cultural and non-political organisation, said this in a save our soul letter written to the chairman of the National Conference, Justice Idris Kutigi.

The Kwara Ekiti Indigenes, in the letter dated May 19, 2014, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune, said that the people in Oke Ero and Ekiti local government areas in Kwara State were demanding reintegration and merging of the areas with their kiths and kin in Ekiti State with whom they are socially and culturally bounded.

The people, according to the letter, said: “In fact, we are kiths and kin. We demand for reclassification and reintegration with our kiths and kin in Ekiti State through boundary adjustment and be merged with Ekiti State.”

The letter was jointly signed by Chief J. O. Daniel, President and Asiwaju of Kwara Ekiti land, Hon. Ayo Oluleye, Secretary, Kwara Ekiti Indigenes and Chief Titus Ashaolu, Legal Adviser, Kwara Ekiti Indigenes.

Other signatories to the letter were Chief D. A. Adeseko, Otun Asiwaju of Kwara Ekiti Land and Professor J. S. Omotosho, Osi Asiwaju of Kwara Ekiti land.

The organisation explained that its demand for merger with Ekiti State was not new, adding that it was an age long genuine agitation which was recommended by many colonial officials through verification and referendum but lamented that “the exigencies of the demand for independence in 1960 and the efforts of our detractors thwarted the implementation.
