EKITI WORKERS TASK INEC ON CREDIBLE ELECTION

Workers in Ekiti State on Thursday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that nobody is allowed to rig the June 21 governorship election holding in the state.

Chairmen of the Trade Union Congress and Nigerian Labour Congress, Kolawole Olaiya and Ayodeji Aluko respectively said this at the Workers’ Day celebration in Ado Ekiti.

The TUC chairman also appealed to politicians in the state to stop the violence which had characterised political rallies in the build-up to the election.

He said, “We should remember that from our historical antecedents, we have been brothers and sisters. Our state, being a homogenous one, should not be divided by politics. Let us embrace peace and shun violence.

“INEC must adhere strictly to the rules. Underage voting or voting by proxy should not be allowed. Everybody must realise that this state is bigger than any of us and its development must take precedence in our hearts.”

Olaniyi also condemned the abduction of over 200 female pupils from a school in Chibok, Borno State.

He called on the government and the security agencies to ensure quick release of the abducted girls saying everything must be done to secure their release.

Governor Kayode Fayemi lauded the workers saying that their cooperation assisted his administration to record its achievements in the state.

He said that workers welfare would continue to be paramount in his heart while urging workers to continue to cooperate with the government.

Fayemi said that it was unfortunate that the opposition which was claiming to love the workers did not increase workers’ salaries while in power.

The governor once again debunked the rumour that he had a private university in Ghana. He said that he did not have any university anywhere in the world.
