The people of Ekiti on Saturday voted in a referendum for the
creation for local council development areas proposed by Governor Kayode
Fayemi.
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission,
Mrs. Cecilia Adelusi, who confirmed that voting did not take place in
three towns, however, described the exercise as a huge success.
Our correspondent who monitored the exercise observed that the referendum was peaceful.
Early results indicated that at St. Thomas Primary School, Irona, 139 were accredited of which 118 voted yes.
At St. Michaels Nursery and Primary School, 60 of the 66 persons accredited voted yes. There was no negative.
Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti after the exercise, Adelusi
disclosed that she was barred from entering Osi and Igbole by the people
of the towns who were opposed to the referendum, adding that there was
also no voting in Ilasha.
“They even blocked the road. I begged them but they wouldn’t allow
me to enter into the town so I had to turn back and came out through
Ido-Osi,” she said.
The people of Osi in Ido/Osi Local Government had protested for
placing them under Ifaki-Ekiti as the headquarter of Osi/ Isokan.
Adelusi said, “We are not to decide, we will collate the results and
send the report to the House of Assembly on Monday,” she added.
In an interview with journalists, the Commissioner for Integration, Mr, Funminiyi Afuye, expressed satisfaction.
He recalled that the exercise was in response to the people’s
request for more local governments during Fayemi’s tours of towns and
villages in Ekiti.
“Anybody that is against it (referendum) is against the people. We
are not talking about politics, we are talking about the future of the
people. That is what they want and they have expressed it.
“There can’t be vacuum in governance, the life of this
administration expires on October 16 and governance continues. This is
something that has been in the pipeline.
“It is through this referendum that we can know what the people
want, it is part of the process to actualise the creation of local
government,” Afuye added.
